Every once in a while the mood strikes to go after some toothy critters. Pike and musky fishing can be a lot of fun but I don’t particularly enjoy losing $15 (or painfully much more!) lures while doing it. Hence, some sort of leader material is generally in order. For jerkbaits I find that a 40-50lbs fluorocarbon leader connected to braid via a swivel works well for me. The stiffness of the fluorocarbon allows for easy casting, decent action in the jerkbait and minimal fouling of the hooks in the line. For crankbaits, swim baits, spoons and trolling lures a wire leader with a good snap and swivel is hard to beat for durability and ease of changing out baits. The problem with most wire leaders though is that unless they are stored meticulously, they will invariably develop a bend or kink in them, making them unsuitable for use. I have thrown out plenty of useless wire leaders.
No so for the Knot 2 Kinky Wire Leaders. These are made from a nickel-titanium alloy that resists kinks, hold their shape and are corrosion resistant. I’ve been using them for a couple of years now and they have preformed wonderfully. The biggest benefit is that if you buy one it basically lasts unless you break off the line. This makes them well worth the money that you spend on them in comparison to run of the mill leaders. The pre-made Knot 2 Kinky leaders incorporate a heavy-duty swivel and size-matched snap. You can also buy straight Knot 2 Kinky leader material that can be tied and used in custom rigging applications. These leaders are very much worth a try for those of you into chasing fish with teeth!
